Let's be frank, Mums, Mamas, Mummies or Mammies, whatever we call them, they deserve to be recognised on more than one day a year! However the annual prompt of 'Mothering Sunday' usually means we make that effort to acknowledge the women in our lives.
However, as with many things, these special days have been hijacked and largely commercialized, suggesting we all need to spend a fortune and buy more THINGS. If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of your purchases (or you know your loved ones will be), it can add a bit of stress to the occasion. The good news is that we’ve compiled a list of some sustainable gifts and ideas to celebrate your special ones. No balloons, cheesy teddies or single-use plastic here.
Speaking purely personally, having a lie-in, being made a cup of tea, or someone else walking the dog all rank highly on my list of things I’d like to receive. However if you are going to buy a gift, we hope this locally-inspired list helps.
FLOWERS, PLANTS & SEEDS
If you’ve got plants at home (and you’re a super organised person) you could always take a cutting and gift it in a small plant pot. The abundance of charity shops in Bath mean you will definitely find a unique pot or jar which will suit.
If your Mum is a keen gardener than some seeds for her favourite plant / vegetables / fruits will also be a simple but well-received gift. Head over to THE URBAN GARDEN in Victoria Park where you will definitely be inspired. We love them because they are committed to the environment and, being a social enterprise, they do business differently, for the benefit of the community and the environment.
If you’re after a bunch of flowers to hand tie, then definitely take a look at SEASONAL BLOOMS – their flowers are grown and delivered in Bath. Importantly, they farm sustainably without chemicals and in harmony with natures seasons. They also have some incredible dried flowers which are obviously far longer-lasting.
FIT & HEALTHY
Does your Mum loves her fitness and movement? Perhaps she runs or does yoga or Pilates in her free time. Maybe she has got into the lockdown walking habit or just enjoys the outdoors? Why not treat her to a some sustainable kit from local brand and community advocate BULLFROG BOTTLES. They go out of their way to create sustainable, reusable items such as refillable water bottles and coffee cups to sustainable yoga mats and equipment. They have a fabulous shop in Kingsmead Square as well as a website - and they invest so much back into the local Bath community, they’re a delight to shop with.
How about a voucher for a class, retreat or experience in the city or surrounds? There are some super practitioners in Bath and lots of new and interesting things to try. Have a look at WELL BATH or RUTH TIMMS YOGA or COMBE GROVE
BRUNCHING & LUNCHING
A lovely thing to do together for Mother’s day is a a nice walk around the city, stroll along the canal or river paths or up around all those super sights we take for granted like the crescent & the circus. Make it special by taking time to stop stop for a coffee & cake or a tasty brunch to keep the energy levels up! Our choice would be flat whites and savoury tarts at WIDCOMBE DELI on the high street behind the station, or pancakes and fruit coulis at BOSTON TEA PARTY near the Assembly Rooms. If you’re in the city centre, swing by CORTADO for divine empanadas and if you’re heading up to the fields near the canal or Holbourne then stop off at DEXTERS for pastries or their epic sausage rolls.
All of these lovely cafes are happy to fill up your reusable cup and some offer money off your drinks when you bring your own cup to take away.
The wonderful women in our lives need celebrating more than once a year we have agreed – and so a treat from any of these guys is perfect for a special occasion, birthday, anniversary or weekend visit! We all love a treat now and then and these locally made, small-business boxes of goodness would delight the whole family, not just your Mum (you can thank me later!).
